Italians call Sangiovese "Blood of Zeus," from Latin Sanguis Jovis (Zeus in Greek mythology, Jupiter in Roman mythology), which means "Blood of Zeus God," reflecting its masculine and heavy characteristics. According to legend, when traveling in eastern Italy, a traveler asked the local monk what wine he was drinking, and the monk replied that it was "Blood of Zeus." This wine was famous then, and with this mysterious name, it has survived.
